Guitar Lessons

Dominic has written a brief insight to his guitar tuition below…

SECTION 1: GUITAR LESSONS FOR BEGINNERS

My teaching studio is located in central Warragul (West Gippsland, VIC), and having been a full-time professional musician and guitar teacher since the early nineties I teach from my own experiences. My lessons are fun and friendly, and more importantly I focus on what YOU, the individual would like to play. In fact, the first question I ask is “Why do you want to play the guitar, and what music do you like?”…Then, (fused with essential fretboard knowledge and techniques) I set about tailoring  a guitar course that is best suited to the individual.

Would you like to learn Blues? Country? Rock? Songs by your favourite band or artiste? I’m enthusiastic about all styles of music, and can teach them at YOUR pace.

Over the years I’ve taught hundreds of people to achieve their guitar playing goals, so why not get in touch today and book a no-obligation one off trial lesson.

Although this particular section is geared around the acoustic guitar, electric guitar lessons are also available.

Buying a guitar:

As well as offering a ‘free loan’ service I also keep a small stock of beginner guitars to sell to students. Students may also purchase strings, capos, guitar stands, tuners, and other accessories from me. Note: this service is exclusively offered for my students convenience (if you are not one of my students then I’m afraid I can’t help you out with guitars or accessories).

Age:

I’ve taught people of all ages, remember, “you’re never too old to learn the guitar!”
For parents of young children who may be reading this, I recommend that children under 10 years of age firstly learn the ukulele before progressing to the guitar (please Click here to read all about it).

Technique and fretboard knowledge:

I start with a variety of strumming, finger picking, and timing exercises. This combined with scale and chordal tuition will soon give you a better understanding of the fretboard, and an insight to a variety of guitar playing techniques.

Songs:

I welcome students to send me a list (and youtube links) of approximately ten songs they’d like to learn. I listen through the songs and incorporate them into the tuition, as and when they become relevant to the various stages of the students progression.

Books:

Beginner students (and in some cases intermediate students depending on ability) are required to purchase ‘Hal Leonard Acoustic Guitar book (HL0069734)’. This is an integral part of my course, and I keep my own stock of this book to sell to students (All other teaching materials and print outs are provided free of charge).

Practice:

Guitar Practice for beginners:

Firstly, you must commit to practicing for AT LEAST half an hour each day
(longer if you plan on becoming Warragul’s answer to Jimi Hendrix! (He jokes)).

Your daily practice session during your first three months of lessons should be divided up in the following way (as a guide, dependent on what level you are at, and based on 30 minutes)…

– At least 5 minutes of ‘left hand’ warm up exercises – chromatic, major, and minor scales

– At least 5 minutes of strumming patterns with a metronome

– At least 10 minutes of ‘right hand’ finger picking exercises – travis pick, claw hammer, bass strum, and arpeggios.

– At least 10 minutes of ‘whatever you want!’ buy some song book’s, jump on youtube, and have a go! (Show me what you’ve been up to! I’ll help you out and give you tips on playing your favourite songs).

Guitar practice for intermediate guitar players:

I can help you with this, and I have some great ideas for you to get the most out of your practice sessions. Book in for lessons, and all will be revealed…

SECTION 2: GUITAR LESSONS FOR INTERMEDIATE PLAYERS

Often people who have played the guitar for a while have told me that they’re ‘stuck in a guitar playing rut’, and tend to play the same things over and over… I can improve your theory knowledge, and help out with more advanced techniques to rejuvenate your guitar playing.

Practice makes perfect
